Our food policy – January 2026
Why we provide nursery prepared lunches
At our nursery, your child’s health, safety, and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do. To ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all children, we do not allow food from home to be brought into the nursery.
Exemptions:
Exemptions to this policy may be reviewed and considered by the Senior Leadership Team for children who have complex allergy or SEND needs. A full risk assessment will be required prior to the exemption being approved.
This policy does not apply to milk formulas or breast milk, which are provided by the parent/carer.
This policy does not apply to non-dairy milk (For example: Soya, Oat based Milk) that may be provided by the parent/carer as a preference.
Why this matters:
Allergy AwarenessSome children in our care have serious food allergies. Even trace amounts of allergens like nuts, dairy, or eggs can cause severe reactions. By preparing all food on-site, we can carefully manage ingredients and avoid accidental exposure.
Preventing Cross-ContaminationYoung children often share food and eat sitting close together. Packed lunches increase the risk of cross-contamination, which can be dangerous for children with allergies or dietary needs. Packed lunches may also increase risk around choking when food is prepared away from the nursery and doesn’t meet the food safety standards. Food Standards: Choking hazards
Healthy, Balanced MealsWe provide nutritious meals that meet Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) standards. Our menus are developed jointly with a specialist early years dietician, which ensures every child receives the right balance of food to support their growth and development. Safe Food StorageWe do not have the facilities to safely store or reheat food brought from home. Improper storage can lead to food borne illnesses, especially with perishable items like dairy or meat.
